The V&A possesses one of the most comprehensive and important collections of Chinese art dating from 3000BC to the present time.   Magnificent sculpture, textiles, exquisite porcelain and elegant furniture are among the many treasures of the finest quality and design.  They are displayed according to use: living, eating, drinking, burial, the court, temple worship and collecting.   The collection is an inspiration to contemporary designers who continue to respond to the artistry and craftsmanship on display.

Chinese Export Art

The collection includes work made in China and brought to the west by merchants who went there to buy tea, silk and porcelain and other fine crafts, as well as spices and drugs.   Some are in European shapes and have decoration which comes from European sources.  Some are a blend of European and Chinese forms.   Chinese art was important in fashionable western interiors.
